staring x with an resoltion higher than 1024x768 doesn't work in i965 chipset.
setting the res manually afterwards with xrandr -s 1680x1050 works.

By default the server will start both outputs (internal LVDS and external panel, in your case) at the closest resolution to each other possible.  This can be overridden using PreferredMode in current server.  Keith intends it to work this way.

Which is already used in xorg.conf, but obviously doesn't help. :-(

Maybe related to https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10625 ? PreferredMode was ignored for me on TMDS-1 before Keith's patch.
