Please refer to http://www.intellinuxgraphics.org/how_to_report_bug.html to provide more info. Could you try the latest git driver, which contains some new xv fixes. I've added the debug line to my xorg.conf, i'll submit Xorg.log.old on the next crash. I think I have given all the useful infos besides that, let me know if not. I didn't succeed in compiling the latest git (checking for intel-gen4asm... no), when is the next release planned ? I forgot something : during the few last crashes, a high pitch noise OR a siren noise came out from my speakers until the computer reboot. Created attachment 15311 [details]

Different crash
Today I had a different bug/crash, here's the corresponding Xorg.log
I switched on my computer, then didn't touch it for several hours. When I came back to it, I couldn't move any window on the screen and CPU usage was almost 100%. Killing the X server with ctrl+alt+backspace solved the problem.
I finally managed to compile the latest git driver. It still crashes often, and the video playback is buggy. Ultimate attempt to be useful : today after 2 hours of inactivity, X CPU usage became very high, and I couldn't do anything but kill the server. I could see that the CPU heat was higher than usual. The logfile was identical to the one i had submitted before, except for the last lines : (II) intel(0): [drm] removed 1 reserved context for kernel (II) intel(0): [drm] unmapping 8192 bytes of SAREA 0xf8b39000 at 0xb7adc000 (II) intel(0): [drm] Closed DRM master. FreeFontPath: FPE "/usr/share/fonts/misc" refcount is 3, should be 2; fixing. Oops. I'd like to apologize for incriminating the video driver for the crashes. The same kind of freeze/reboot occured today during a memtest86+, so I guess it has nothing to do with xf86-video-intel. However, it doesn't explain the poor performance of the movies display. my xorg.conf
Nick, do you have other same kind or similar motherboard to try? I seriously doubt if it's a HW issue, for example, memory. Even though XvMC has some performance issue compared with SW decoding, I didn't see other report that video play on G33 is not even smoothy. I believe video playback should be smooth now with xserver 1.5 and intel driver 2.4 or newer. Earlier I had slowness problems with xserver 1.4 and intel drivers 2.2 and 2.3, when the default textured video was used. Now even the textured video works smoothly, so overlay forcing done by some distributions is not needed anymore. Using 965G (GMA X3100). |
